adelaida

Based on a true story, a young Nicaraguan woman flees into the jungle, pursued by the ones who love her the most.

After interviewing my grandmother when she was 103 years old, I was inspired to make Adelaida. During the interview, she told me that she wasn't allowed to marry the man she truly loved and was forced by her family to marry my grandfather. Her story haunted me because it was a story nobody in my family had known until she told me this when I was interviewing her four months before she passed away.

When I sat down to write the script, I wanted to tell a purely visual story with almost no dialogue. Working with a Nicaraguan cast and crew was both exciting and challenging. Only my lead actress, cinematographer, producer, and I live in Los Angeles. All the other actors and crew are my family members or people who live near our family's farm. They were all very excited and helpful in making this film, and this movie wouldn't exist without their hard work and compassionate hearts. I will be forever grateful for their participation in making this movie dedicated to my grandmother, Adelaida Hernandez.
